Brick Walls

This entry was posted on 12/11/2006 8:16 PM and is filed under Prewitt,Pruett.

My own brick wall comes from the parentage of my Great-Great Grandfather.  Most of the online data lists David Prewitt as the father of William Prewitt, Sr. (my Gr-Gr Grandfather).  William married Sarah DeMoss.  Previous family history listed William's father as Elias Prewitt, who married Emiline Ashley.  I have been unable to find any information on Elias and Emiline, so I'm not sure if that previous family history was accurate or not.

My Pruitts are from Pittsylvania County Virginia. Abram or Abel Pruitt married Eliza Barber. I believe their son David married Christiana Barber in 1875. Their son Henry Early Pruitt was my Grandfather. Henry said he grew up in the Toshes community of Pittsylvania County, which is not too far from Gretna, Virginia.

I am trying to determine Abel or Abram's parents and Eliza Barber's parents. Her father may have been named Jay Barber. I'd apreciate any help with these lines and I'm willing to share what I have discovered.

      Hi John,
Glad to see another website for Pruitt/Prewitt genealogy!
My husband's Prewitt line comes from Williamsburg, Whitley, KY. Our brick wall is his grandfather, Siler Prewitt who was married to Amanda Prewitt. We have not been able to find who Siler's father was. Siler was born in KY according to the Census. He lived with an Uncle Billy Bray in the early 1850's-60's.
If anyone has any information on this line please contact me @

Not sure if this helps at all. My line goes through David II and David as well. My great-great-grandfather, Silas McGuire Prewitt (b 1820), was son of Elijah Prewitt (b 1783) and Susannah DeMoss. William was Elijah's brother. Their father was David II (b1746) and his wife was Jane Parrott. His father was David (b1726), who was son of Richard (b1698), son of Henry (b1654), son of Thomas (b1616 in Salisbury, Wilshire, England). My list shows an Elias who was born around 1784. His parents were Obediah (b1752) and Mary "Polly" Palmer.

        d. 1692 in ,Charles River Co,Virginia
"Early Virginia Immigrants" by G.C. Greer, Clerk of the Virginia State Land
Office contains a list of 25,000 persons who came to Virginia from 1623 to 1666
along with the patentee or person who brought them over. In this list is
Thomas Prewitt, May 6 1636, indentured by Joane Bennet to Charles River County, Virginia.
Joane Bennet received 450 aces in Charles River County, Virginia, upon the
Poqueson River, east towards the bay, west into the woods, north upon the Pinye Swamp (river), and south upon Robert Thrasher. 50 acres due for transfer of eight (8) persons...Ann Winter, John Roote, Jon Marshall, Andrew Chant, Jon Morris, Pole Carplights, and Thomas Prewitt. Joane Bennet was a Quaker.

Thomas Prewitt was thus brought over to America as an indentured servant. Once a person served five years they received 50 acres of land.

On June 2,1636, Thomas Prewitt was granted his 50 acres of land in Clarles River County, Virginia, being a neck of ground at the New Poqueson, west upon William Clark a creek, then east upon Thomas Harwood a creek. The said 50 acres of land being due upon him the said Thomas Prewitt for the transportation of one servant into this colony. It appears that Thomas Prewitt and wife were Quakers and not married by the rules of the established church.

Charles River County, Virginia, was changed to York County. In 1646, Thomas Prewitt confessed that he borrowed a canoe from John Wilson and lost it. He was ordered to pay Wilson 2 bushels of corn for the next November 1. This is from records of York County.

In 1647, John Thomas has an attachment against Thomas Prewitt to secure a debt of 600 pounds of tobacco.

On May 24,1648, Thomas Prewitt confesses judgement to Robert Abrall for 1202 pounds of tobacco to be paid the next October 10. He placed three cows as bounty in the court of York.

In 1648, Thomas Prewitt confessed judgement to William Hockaday for 1 1/2 bushels of corn and 56 pounds of tobacco.

They were not married by the Church of England so the marriage was not recognized as real. This was part of the persecution of the Quakers.

On December 6,1648, Thomas Prewitt binds himself to pay John Madison 600 pounds of tobacco.

Also, family stories say there is Indian blood on either the Pruitt side or Carnal side.

If your family came through Tenn. you need two books one is "The Bugger Saga" by Dr Maurice Pruitt. and "The Pruitt's Patterson's and their Rhodes Relatives" by Imogene Hoover Hagan published in 1978. I think that Imogene still works part time in the Lawrence Co. Genealogy Library, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. I was there back in the spring and just missed her. They should have both books and I think you will enjoy them very much. I can not find my copy of Bugger Saga right now. but I believe the story of the shooting is in there. I may have it mixed up with another Pruitt. You will find some very good stories about the Pruitt's in Southern Tenn. Most are about things that happened in the Civil War.

Imogene did a lot of Genealogy work and follows the Pruitt family into Tenn. I think her book might help you.

There is also Richard Prewitt's books that he is now in the process of putting them on CD's. I got a lot of use out of them. He has taken each state and put down things like births marriages and deaths and some other things. and listed them by county. I have books for VA, NC, SC, and Texas. Sounds like you need the one from Tenn. and VA. maybe NC. You can have them all put on one CD.

E-Mail me at pause10@juno.com and I will give you his address.

My 3rd Great-Grandfather, Wilis William Pruitt, is listed in Richard's book with the wrong parents. This has caused me a lot of difficulty and attempts to correct the error have fallen flat. This is the largest of several errors in the line listed in the book.

Picked up his g-grandfather, Francis Marion Pruett (various spellings) in 1870 in Lincoln Co.., TN; by 1880 he and family were in Cleburne Co., AL, where the family had settled and some still remain. My father in law was born in Oxford, AL, near Anniston, in 1903. He later came to Chattanooga, TN, where my husband was born.

There has been confusion on many web sites mixing info of our Francis Marion Pruett, and his family with another of the same name in the same general area and time period. These are two distinct people, for I have found them both in the 1880 census with their respective families in different states.

I have never been able to determine who the parents of our FMP were.

      Can anyone help Elaine?

More on the above msg: The Francis Marion Pruett of our line was born in GA or AL, and buried at Bethel Cemetery, Clay Co., AL. The Clay Co. and Cleburne Co. line join near there, and records indicate that family lived most of their lives in Cleburne Co. though in early years, census indicates some years in TN. His tombstone reads "Marion Pruett, 1832-1918." The stone was erected by a grand daughter years after his death, and research leads me to question the dates. He married Caroline Burgess, date and place unknown, and they had seven known children. Caroline is believed to be buried a few miles away in an unmarked grave at Edwardsville Cemetery, Cleburne Co., Several of Marion's children and grandchildren are also buried at Bethel, near him.

(It is important that readers distinguish between this FMP and another of the same name and general area who married Sophronia Harris. Some online family trees have mistakenly intermixed the families.)

1900 - Caroline is found in the Edwardsville, Cleburne Co. AL census with three girls: Barzilla J; Lillie A; Essie Leona. Notably Marion was not listed with them. This is one reason I question his tombstone death date.

Of their children, it appears that Lillie A. and Barzilla J. never married. Margaret V. appears in only the 1870 census. William Jasper Pruett married Sarah Elizabeth Smith Bentley, a widow with one child. No Pruett children have been found for this marriage. Joshua Franklin, my husband's grandfather, married Eliza Elizabeth "Lizzie"Buttram and they reared 12 children in Cleburne/Clay Counties. Mary E. married John W. M. I've had a Pruitt Brick wall for the last 30 years! My lineage goes to my gggg grandfather Jacob Pruitt who came to Texas with his family in 1822. The two sons (Levi B. & Martin T.)say in census records that they were born 1814 and 1816 in IL or MO (with IL being listed more frequently). Varying children of each of the sons say their fathers were born in IL, MO, OH, MS or TX. I tend to believe Jacob and his family came from Illinois, though I have no proof. There was a Pruitt family in IL in the late 1790's and early 1800's but I can find no link to my Jacob except for some common names of the children. Jacob died in Texas in 1846/47. His first wife is supposed to have been Elizabeth --?--. His second wife, Mary Eaton, was widow of Wm Welch. We know that she came from IL--and there is some evidence that they knew each other prior to coming to Texas. With Mary he had 3 more children: Jake, Merandy Jane and Mary Kay. Mary later married a Mr. Edens and a Mr. Thomas.

Anybody have a spare Jacob Pruitt laying around that "went to Texas"? I have a very good record of Jacob's descendents through the children of both wives and would be happy to share.

It doesn't matter how you spell the name, your family is undoubtedly spelled in all ways. In fact, my dad and his brothers and sisters spell it two ways: Pruitt and Pruett. I find my family listed in records as Prewitt and Prewett...even the same person. You also need to be aware of first name, middle name, nicknames. My grandfather was William Johnson Pruitt. I've found him as Johnse, Johnson, and WJ. Same with his dad. His name was Wiley Millard Filmore Pruitt. I've found his as MF, Wiley, Millar, and Filmore. What complications.

Hi all, My brick wall (tower, etc) is my g-g grandfather. This is what I know regarding my Pruitt/Pruett (seen various spellings):

My grandfather Stinson Carrol Pruitt married Annie Caroline Nunnelee in Hill County TX in June 1907. I found Stinson and Annie on the 1910 Limestone County Census. Sinston (b.1888 d. 1966) states he was born in Texas and he list his father, James W. Pruett/Pruitt (b. 1855/56 d. 1919) as being born in Texas. I also have Stinson and Annie on the 1920 Miller Co., AR census which he list himself as being born in Texas and his father as being born in the US and mother, Rachel Elizabeth Ramsey (b. 1868 d. 1955) being born in GA. Lizzy and Jim were married in Van Zandt Co, TX in 1886.

I have James William (Jim or JW) Pruitt/Pruett and Rachel Elizabeth "Lizzy" and Stinson on the 1900 Polk County Texas Census which Jim reports that he was born in Mississippi.

I have my grandfather's brother, Shannon Pruett/Pruitt on the 1910 CA census as listing his birth as Texas and James William's birth as TN.

According to one family member James William's father's name was either James or John Carrol. I have found a James Carrol in Cherokee County Texas, where is reportedly where James William was born (as well as my Grandfather) listed in the household of a James Carrol Pruett. However, he is older than any of this James Carrol's children listed from both of his marriages. Which would place this James William being born around 1867.

My James William was born either Oct., 1855 (tombstone) or November, 1856 (death certificate). I do not know which for sure or if either is an accurate.

No one in my family knows who James William's father might have been other than that one cousin have a vague idea on a possible name.

If any one has any pointers on what to do next, I would greatly appreciate it and/or any information.

      Thank you.

Linda, I have several suggestions for you. You may have already tried these, but just in case:
        1. Have you checked the Cherokee County land records for all the Pruitt's? Check the direct and reverse index for all variations of Pruitt for 20 years before and after the date you know he was there. If he is yours, the wife and children will be named when the deed is transfered.
        2. Have you looked at the TX 1867-69 Voters Registration? You have to go to the appropriate counties, but it could tell you when the voter came into the state and maybe from where.
        3. The TX Scholastic Census of 1854 could also provide you with information. (This may be a little early for you, but you might find something)
        4. Make sure you check the tax rolls for all the counties that. I've had great break throughs with tax rolls that pointed me to land held in other counties or states where I did find my ancestors.
Hope this gives you some new places to look. Good luck!

I don't have anything on any descendents of Cooper Wright Pruitt, but I do have the ancestry of him, including his siblings: I have him as the 4th child of Sidney and Sarah Pruitt. Older sisters are Della M. (b. abt 1868), Challey H. (b. abt 1871) and Daisy M. (b. abt 1871). Younger sister is E.R. (b. abt 1879). I found the family in Warren County, Kentucky in the 1880 Census.
I have the marriage date for Sidney and Sarah as 7 Apr 1862 in Allen County, Kentucky. I don't have any marriage information for any of their children. I also don't have dates of death for them or any of their children.
I have Alfred Pruitt first married to Rebeca Jackson on 10 Sep 1834, then to Emeline Wadkins on 28 Dec 1842. Alfred was the 3rd child of 12 for Abraham and Mahala (Hill) Pruitt. Abraham later married Nancy (Miller) Cassidy and had 5 more children.
Does this information match what you have? Hopefully, we can fill in some of each other's gaps in information.
